Product Description
An 1810 Mediterranean Ship's Passport (more commonly known as a "Ship's Scallop" because of the way that they were cut across the top) signed by the Fourth President of the United States, James Madison. A beautiful document with a scalloped top and engraved vignettes of lighthouse and sailing ship. This document provided the protection of the United States, and proved that the ship wasn't running contraband. The ship was the Brig "Rose in Bloom" of New York, Captained by Jebidiah Scott, with a crew of nine men. The document, made of parchment, dated January 31, 1810, is in very nice condition (the photo is a little dark), with the wafer United States seal and edges perfectly intact. There is NO paper loss at the folds. The document has minor discoloration at the upper left edge and bottom right, and even toning throughout. The signatures of both James Madison and his Secretary of State Thomas Smith (who Madison later fired and was arguably the worst Secretary of State ever) are both clear and nice. The document, which measures approximately 10.5"x15.5" inches, is in overall very nice condition.Museum-quality frame (not pictured) included.Sold with Certificates of Authenticity from both The Autograph Source (Lifetime Guarantee), and independent third-party authenticator PSA/DNA.
