RETURN TO PARADISE: GARY COOPER and ROBERT WISE Both sign the contract for Cooper's appearance in this 1953 film, which Wise produced. Document signed: "Gary Cooper", "Robert E. Wise - V.P.", 13 pages, 8x11. No place, 1952 July 3. Aspen Pictures, Inc., a California corporation, employs Cooper "to portray the leading male role in the motion picture ... entitled 'RETURN TO PARADISE,' based upon the story 'MR. MORGAN' in the James Michener novel entitled 'RETURN TO PARADISE'", the terms of the contract to commence upon completion of a film being made by Cooper for Warner Brothers. Cooper is to be paid $50,000 in fixed compensation in 10 weekly installments, another $50,000 in deferred compensation from revenues derived from the film, and contingent compensation equal to 20% of net profits from the picture. The contract also stipulates the film's director (Mark Robson) and other provisions relating to the filming in British West Samoa. Signed on last page. Nominated five times, Gary COOPER won the 1942 Academy Award for Best Actor for the title role in Sergeant York and won the Oscar in 1953 for the role of Marshal Will Kane in High Noon. He was also nominated for the role of Longfellow Deeds in Mr. Deeds Goes to Town, Lou Gehrig in The Pride of the Yankees and Robert Jordan in For Whom the Bell Tolls. Cooper was awarded a Special Academy Award in 1961 "For his many memorable screen performances and the international recognition he, as an individual, has gained for the motion picture industry." Cooper was too ill to accept the Oscar in person and his close friend, a tearful Jimmy Stewart, accepted it in his name. A month later, Cooper died of cancer at the age of 60.
