HOWARD HAWKS. Document signed twice: "Howard Hawks", 4p, 8x11. Los Angeles, California, 1962 May 8. Agreement for sale of a motion pictures script written by William Hawks, based on a short story by Pat Frank, The Girl Who Almost Got Away. Hawks signs on p. 4 as seller of the script, and on the same page on behalf of Laurel Productions, one of the buyers. Also signed "Bernard Donnenfeld" on behalf of Paramount Pictures, the other buyer. Accompanied by 2p notary attachment certifying the signatures of Hawks and Donnenfeld. HOWARD HAWKS (1896-1977), one of the greatest film directors of the studio era, was also a screenwriter and producer. His directing credits include such famous films as Bringing Up Baby (1938), His Girl Friday (1940), The Big Sleep (1946), Red River (1948) and Rio Bravo (1959). He was nominated for an Oscar for Sergeant York (1941), and received a special award from the Academy of Motion Pictures in 1974. A good judge of potential star quality, Hawks helped to launch the careers of Rita Hayworth, Rosalind Russell, Lauren Bacall and Marilyn Monroe. BERNARD DONNENFELD, a lawyer specializing in entertainment law, including film and TV production and intellectual property rights, was an executive of Paramount Pictures (1957-1969). From 197-1974, he was President of Filmakers Group, a movie production and distribution company. Staple holes and paperclip impression at top left.
