GIOACCHINO ROSSINI. Partly Printed DS: "Gioachino Rossini", 1p, 10x4. Palermo, 1853 September 12. Receipt for payment. Endorsed (unknown hand) on verso. In Italian, not translated. By the time he was 18, Gioacchino Rossini (1792-1868) had written his first opera. The Italian composer is best known for his comic opera, The Barber of Seville, and his grand opera, William Tell, with its famous overture. The "Overture" to the four-act William Tell became one of the most familiar of all operatic works when it was used to open the radio and television show, The Lone Ranger. Guillame Tell was first performed in Paris in 1829. The Italian composer, the leading representative of the Bel Canto School of Opera and one of the last masters of opera buffa, spent his later years in Paris and his native Italy. At the time he signed this document, Rossini had been in Italy since 1837. In 1855, two years after this document, he returned to Paris, where he would die in 1868. Vignette at left margin. Lightly creased. Folds, vertical folds touch the "a" in Giaochino and the second "s" of Rossini. Light show through of writing on verso at signature. Soiled at right margin, nicked at mid-right edge.
