HANK WILLIAMS Signed royalty agreement for "Jesus is Calling" (1950), which Williams co-wrote and would record under the name "Luke the Drifter." Also signed by co-writer Charlie Monroe and record executive Wesley Rose. Document signed: "Hank Williams", "Wesley H. Rose", "Charlie Monroe", 1 page, 8x14. Nashville, Tennessee, 1950 November 10. Royalty agreement with Rose-Acuff Publications for the song "Jesus is Calling", granting co-writers Williams and Monroe 3-cents per copy of sheet music sold, 50% of profits from mechanical reproductions and 50% of foreign royalties. (Williams and Monroe are designated together as "the writer," meaning that each would receive half of these sums.) HANK WILLIAMS (1923-1953), who debuted at the Grand Ole Opry on June 11, 1949, became a country legend a life tragically shortened by alcohol abuse. His biggest hits included "Cold, Cold Heart," "Your Cheating Heart," and "Jambalaya." Williams died in the back of his chauffer-driven Cadillac on New Year's Day, 1953. Ironically his single, "I'll Never Get Out of This World Alive," hit the top of the charts immediately after his death. Williams released some of his religiously themed recordings, including "Jesus is Calling," under the name of Luke the Drifter. In 1961, Williams and songwriter/producer Fred Rose (Williams' agent, and father of a signer here), along with Jimmie Rodgers, were the first three persons inducted into the Country Music Hall of Fame. Hank Williams, Jr. (b. 1949), also became a popular country music singer/songwriter. WESLEY ROSE, Fred's son, became a successful music executive and booking agent, rising to the Presidency of Acuff-Rose, Milen Records, and others.
