LAWRENCE TIERNEY Consent form authorizing the Motion Picture Relief Fund to reproduce Lawrence Tierney's signature and likeness for a series of stamps raising money for needy film industry veterans. The form is by Tierney to grant permission. A remarkable, perfectly verified example! Document signed: "Lawrence Tierney", 1 page, 8x11. Hollywood, California, no date but circa 1946. Lawrence Tierney grants to the Motion Picture Relief Fund, Inc., its successors and assigns, the exclusive right, until December 31, 1947 to use his name, autograph, photographic likeness, or artist's sketch of the likeness, for reproduction on engraved, embossed or printed stamps, and in stamp albums, and in connection with the advertising and exploitation of these stamps and stamp albums for sale throughout the world. Lawrence Tierney (1919-2002) was a tough guy on screen and off. Known for his gangster roles, he was frequently jailed for instigating bar fights, and even in his senior years was intimidating TV cast members. (He threatened Seinfeld with a butcher knife on set.) His screen image was sealed in what one critical called his "memorably menacing" performance in the title role in Dillinger (1945). He played Jesse James in Badman's Territory (1946), and a vicious hitchhiker in The Devil Thumbs a Ride (1947). His Born to Kill (1947), lambasted by critics of that era as morally repugnant, is now considered a film noir classic. He was still playing a gangster nearly fifty years later in Quentin Tarantino's Reservoir Dogs (1992). He even played a holodeck gangster on an episode of Star Trek: the Next Generation. Tierney's career suffered for decades from his drinking problems and brushes with the law, but resumed in earnest on television after he stopped drinking in 1982.
